2008 Scholarship Recipients
The Community Foundation of Greater
Lafayette's scholarship recipients for 2008 were
formally recognized on May 22, 2008 at a special dessert

Max and Elsie Goken Endowment Fund
Scholarship
The application deadline for the 2008 program was noon,
April 7, 2008.

about 2009 when it becomes available.
The Max and Elsie Goken Endowment Fund was created in
2006 by a bequest from the estate of Elsie Goken. Elsie
and her husband, Max, came to Lafayette in 1952 when he
joined Lafayette Life Insurance Company and later became
president and CEO. Before coming to Lafayette, Elsie
Goken taught school in Bloomington, Illinois, in a
one-room schoolhouse and worked her way up to a position
in the superintendent’s office. While in Lafayette, she
became active in an organization that promotes
educational opportunities for women. She was also a life
member and Board member if the YWCA, and volunteered for
Meals on Wheels, Red Cross, and the local hospital.
Proceeds from the Goken estate will help fund college
scholarships for those who wish to continue their
education or return to school to better provide form
themselves and their families.
Four Goken scholarships of $5,000 were available in
2008.
Robert and Dorothy Hughes Community
Fund Scholarship
The application deadline for the 2008 program was noon,
April 7, 2008.
We will post information
about 2009 when it becomes available.
The Robert and Dorothy Hughes Community Fund was created
in 2007 by Joan Anne Hughes. Proceeds from the Hughes
Fund will help fund college scholarships to earn a
baccalaureate degree in Nursing for those with financial
need who live or work in Tippecanoe County, Indiana.
Two Hughes Scholarships of $1,000 each were available in
2008.

Lilly Scholarship Recipients
The application deadline for the 2008
program was noon, January 17, 2008. We will post
information about 2009 when it becomes available.
Lilly Endowment Inc. sponsors the Lilly Endowment
Community Scholarship (LECS) Program administered by
community foundations across the state. The program is
designed to raise the level of
educational attainment in Indiana and increase awareness
of the potential of Indiana's community foundations to
improve the quality of life of the state's residents.
The scholarships are for full tuition and fees for four
years at the public or private accredited Indiana
college or university of the recipient's choice. A $800
annual stipend for required books and equipment is also
included.

The number of scholarships awarded in each county is
based on population. Tippecanoe County currently has four
scholarships.

The community foundation administers a limited
number of other scholarships but direct application to
the foundation isn't possible. Most of these
scholarships are for graduates of specific high schools;
