Other Scholarship Opportunities

 

Al Neuharth Free Spirit Scholarship and Conference Program

Eligibility: Seniors graduating from high school in 2009 who are interested in pursuing a career in journalism and demonstrate a "free spirit" are eligible.

Amount of aid available: $10,000 to top 2 students. $1,000 scholarship and a trip to a conference in Washington DC available to others.

American Civil Liberties Union Student Essay Contest

Eligibility: Essay contest for local middle and high school students based on the topic, "My Civil Liberties Matter." Two levels - grades 6-9 and grades 10-12.

Amount of aid available: Top 3 winners at both levels will receive $100, $50, or $25 respectively.

Hoosier Presidential Scholarship

Sponsor: Indiana University

Eligibility: Must be an entering freshman who is an Indiana resident and who has been admitted to Indiana University. These students are invited by the campus to apply for the scholarship. Recipients are named in late January.

Amount of aid available: Four-year renewable scholarships range from $6,000 to $12,000.

John and Carol Myers Scholarship

Eligibility: For the benefit of residents of the 7th Congressional District, selection is based upon the following:

Ø  The student resides in one of the following counties:

· Benton    · Clay        · Fountain       · Martin              · Morgan   · Putnam         · Vermillion

· Boone     ·Clinton    · Greene          · Monroe            · Owen      · Sullivan        · Vigo

· Brown    · Davies    · Hendricks     · Montgomery    · Parke      · Tippecanoe   · Warren

Ø  the student has completed no less than one year of post secondary education and is considered at least a second year student by the student’s chosen institution of higher education;

Ø  the student has a minimum GPA of 3.0;

Ø  the student will attend an accredited Indiana institution of higher education;

Ø  the student has volunteered during the political campaign of a Republican candidate, worked for the Republican Party, or worked for an affiliated organization.

Mary E. Denham Scholarship Fund

 Sponsor: American Red Cross of Tippecanoe County

Eligibility: Will provide health and safety classes for those who are unable to afford them. Includes CPR/AED, first aid and life guarding classes that the chapter offers. Candidate must write an essay (max 100 words) describing why they need the scholarship. Must also explain how they believe that others will benefit from their successful completion of the course for which they are applying. Candidates can only apply and be chosen once.

Amount of aid available: Maximum amount - $65. Includes the amount of the class, participant manuals and any other additional supplies required for the course.

Indiana Sheriffs' Association

Sponsor: Indiana Sheriffs' Association

Eligibility: Will award 40 scholarships of $500 each to high school seniors and college students pursuing a degree in criminal justice. Applicants must be Indiana residents and full-time students majoring in a law enforcement field at an Indiana college or university. They must also be members, or a dependent child or grandchild or someone who is a member, of the Sheriffs' Association.

Application Deadline: April, 2009

Tempest Homes Scholarship

Eligibility: Graduate in 2009 from a high school in Tippecanoe, Benton, White, Carroll, Clinton, Montgomery, Fountain or Warren counties; utilize or have family income which qualifies for the federal free or reduced lunch program; maintain at least a C average and answer 10 questions which demonstrate how their life has been impacted by each of the eight types of developmental assets. 

Amount of aid available: $500

Valparaiso University Scholarship for Lilly Scholar Recipients

Sponsor: Valparaiso University

Eligibility: Must be a 2007 Lilly Endowment community Scholar.

Amount of aid available: On campus room and board

Application Deadline: Not applicable

To apply: Be awarded a Lilly Endowment community Scholarship.
